6th May 2023 – The Phensem Parents Support Group (PSGB) conducted the third session of its Inclusive Learning and Play workshop series, titled “Alternative Modes of Communication.” Supported by The Rotary Club of Thimphu, the workshop was led by AAC Educators from the Communication Department, Centre for Special Education – Vidya Sagar, India.
Many children with disabilities, particularly those with speech and language disorders or motor skill challenges, struggle to communicate, making inclusion in school and society difficult. This workshop introduced Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods to help children express themselves. Participants learned how to assess a child’s current communication level, develop strategy plans, and set personalized goals to enhance their communication skills.
The training is part of a broader initiative covering four key areas of inclusive education:
Phensem Co-Founder and Executive Director, Karma Sonam Dorji, emphasized the importance of providing alternative communication methods for children with disabilities, ensuring they can learn and interact meaningfully at school and home.
Dzongkha teacher Yonten Ngedrup highlighted the need for SEN Aides in all schools, rather than limiting support to select institutions. A parent, Wangmo, shared that while the training was valuable, assistive tools are difficult to access in Bhutan and must be imported at high costs. She urged authorities to reduce or waive import taxes on these essential resources.
A total of 42 participants—including parents, teachers, and SEN Aides from Thimphu, Paro, Phuntsholing, Mongar, and Gelephu—attended the workshop. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 416 children with disabilities across Bhutan.
